SPARKS, Nev. (Aug. 28, 2025) – Global aerospace and defense company, SNC has been awarded a $471.5-million, multi-year contract with U.S. Special Operations Command (SOCOM) to continue production, sustainment and contractor logistics support for its Degraded Visual Environment Pilotage System (DVEPS). SNC has been delivering the critical DVE mitigation system for SOCOM and select U.S. Army aircraft since 2020.
SNC DVE solutions enhance visibility and restore situational awareness for aircrews in low-visibility conditions, enabling them to “see and avoid” obstacles in the flight path during takeoff, enroute and landing phases of flight.
“SNC DVE systems provide the asymmetric capability needed to execute rotary-wing missions in near-zero visibility conditions while increasing mission effectiveness and pilot safety within special operations and medical evacuation units,” said Tim Owings, executive vice president of SNC’s MST business area. “We are proud to continue empowering our nation’s military aircrews with this lifesaving technology.”
DVEPS is a multi-sensor-system that provides real-time situational awareness to aid pilots in maintaining spatial awareness during and after transition from Visual Meteorological Conditions (VMC) to DVE conditions. Engineered for optimum performance under the most challenging conditions, these multi-sensor systems aid pilots flying in snow, fog, rain and sandstorms by detecting and imaging terrain and obstacles such as wires, towers and other aircraft – sending alerts at appropriate times.
Flying without DVE mitigation technology is often compared to flying blind. Pilots are forced to rely solely on instrumentation and limited visual cues. This can be disorientating and dangerous, especially in unpredictable weather or unfamiliar terrain. In contrast, SNC DVE systems use advanced sensors, including lidar and radar, to detect and image these objects, providing pilots with clear, real-time information and alerts about surroundings.
“SNC’s DVE solutions represent a pivotal advancement in aviation safety and technology,” said Stu Wildman, senior vice president of programs. “Aircrews using DVE systems report the technology allows them to fly in weather conditions that would have previously grounded their operations. Special operations crews have also highlighted a dramatic reduction in training time, increased safety and improved mission success rates. That’s a profound impact.”
Under the indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract, SNC will continue full-rate production of DVEPS systems from its operations facility in Sparks, Nevada.
