SPARKS, Nev. , November 19, 2013 – Sierra Nevada Corporation (SNC) congratulates United Launch Alliance (ULA), Lockheed Martin Corporation, and other industry partners such as the University of Colorado at Boulder, on yesterday’s successful launch of the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution (MAVEN) spacecraft. Part of NASA’s Mars Scout Program, MAVEN will be the first spacecraft mission dedicated to exploring the upper atmosphere of Mars.
The MAVEN mission will provide scientists with insight into the history of Mars’ atmosphere and climate, liquid water and planetary habitability.
“It was a picture-perfect launch of MAVEN atop an Atlas V rocket,” said Mark Sirangelo, corporate vice president and head of SNC’s Space Systems. “From today’s successful launch to the data that will be gathered in the months and years to come, it is another example of the dynamic work that can result when government and industry work hand in hand.”
