SPARKS, Nev., February 11, 2013 – Sierra Nevada Corporation (SNC) successfully delivered a prototype Transport Telemedicine capability developed under a U.S. Army Applied Aviation Technology Directorate (AATD) Contract. This is part of a U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command telemedicine effort. This Transport Telemedicine capability was evaluated at the Joint Training Center, Reno-Stead Airport with support from Charlie Company 1st Battalion 168th MEDEVAC. C/1-168 is a General Support Aviation Battalion of the Nevada National Guard. SNC’s transport telemedicine program is focused on the capture and communication of patient care/condition information beginning at the Point of Injury (POI) until the patient’s delivery to definitive care at a medical treatment facility (MTF). It is believed that having this enhanced telemedicine capability on the battlefield will have a positive impact on soldier survivability. In short, SNC’s technology will provide the capability to save more lives.
The transport telemedicine system adds capability to the Warrior Medic at the point of care. It will enhance communication with the receiving treatment facility. It will also add to the critical patient data entering the electronic health record. That data can be used by research agencies such as the U.S. Army Institute for Surgical Research to develop future medical capabilities and improve protocols and procedures.
The Proof of Military Utility was conducted on a U.S. Army MEDEVAC Black Hawk helicopter while in flight. The patient treatment area of a MEDEVAC Black Hawk is considered one of the most stringent environments on the battlefield. Systems experience noise, vibration, temperature fluctuation, electronic emissions, and a wide range of other insults. Patient information was transmitted over an Army standard AN/PRC-117F radio in both the line of site and DAMA SATCOM modes. The transport telemedicine system provides a Critical Care Situational Awareness (CCSA) capability by linking care provider and patient to MTF, Command and Control, as well as remotely located medical experts. This CCSA capability provides continuity of care throughout all elements of the medical evacuation process including, Combat Life-Savers, Combat Medics, Battalion Aid Stations, MTF’s, ground transport vehicles and rotary and fixed wing transports.
