Sr. Network and System Administrator Engineer

The System and Network Administrator Engineer is responsible for designing, supporting, and administration of computing hardware systems, packaged software, peripheral equipment, proprietary software, and network connectivity to ensure the efficient and successful operations of the remote and local customer systems. This role supports a user group of ~60 engineers utilizing the Vehicle Avionics and Flight Control Integration Labs (VAIL/FCIL).

  • “Own” the lab network and IT assets and ensure reliable connectivity for the user group

  • Apply forward-thinking to continuously assess and improve the state of the labs in the areas of networking, user support, asset and configuration management, and cybersecurity


  • Review and adapt existing network systems architecture to continue seamless communication with local, corporate, and external entities (switches, VLANs, firewalls)

  • Curate network traffic effectively to support Linux-based machines on a Windows-based network architecture (DNS, domains, ports, active directory groups)

  • Pre-emptively assess network/system reliability or stability risks and suggest short-term and long-term corrective actions

User Support

  • Provide technical support to fielded systems, systems integration laboratory, and engineering efforts in a dynamic fast-paced environment
  • Interpret customer requirements, decompose them into hardware and system requirements and specifications, and clearly document resolutions
  • Effectively communicate with users, interdepartmental IT/network/software/hardware experts, and vendor representatives to assist in troubleshooting efforts

Asset, Configuration, and Data Management

  • Track and configuration manage physical (laptops, switches, admin server, workstations, docks, screens) and virtual assets (ESXi, VMWare)
  • Track, acquire, and manage test-critical software and licenses
  • Develop and maintain configuration baselines for assets, systems, and sub-systems
  • Originate network diagrams, specifications, control documents, verification and validation plans, procedures, reports, or other documentation to track configuration baselines and changes
  • Streamline data handling for secure, easy, and rapid data transfer to meet user needs


  • Ensure compliance of lab systems and assets with corporate cybersecurity initiatives
  • Ensure seamless roll outs of cybersecurity software stacks
  • Monitor lab network traffic for suspicious activity, identify vulnerabilities, and work mitigations with the cybersecurity team


  • Requires a BS in Related Field (Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering)

  • Typically a 10 years’ experience as a Network Engineer/Systems Administrator, Systems/Network Analyst, Systems Analyst, IT Analyst/Administrator, Software Engineer/Systems Administrator etc.

  • Windows XP, 7, 10 systems administration experience mandatory (including domain management with Active Directory)

  • Cisco knowledge required (Cisco CCNA/CCNP preferred)

  • Virtual machine management experience required (ESXi preferred)

  • Hands-on expertise with a wide variety of network related tools, concepts, technologies, best practices and security procedures

  • DNS, DHCP, IP, TCP, UDP, Multicast Streaming

  • Hands-on expertise with network hardware, protocols, and media including but not limited to Ethernet, Fiber Optics, UTP, and Wireless

  • Familiarity with Designing, Building, and Fielding Systems while using engineering best practices for Configuration Management and Documentation.

  • Must be willing to travel or support non-standard work hours occasionally (<10%)


  • Comp TIA A+ Certification

  • RedHat Linux System Administration experience

  • Familiarity with NIST cybersecurity framework and/or cybersecurity maturity model certification (CMMC)

  • Experience with DoD Software, Security, and Accreditation policies and tools

  • Writing and maintaining Shell scripts (BASH, CSH, TCSH or equivalent)

  • Familiar with Python, PERL, PowerShell or equivalent is desired
