Joint Precision Approach and Landing System (JPALS)

SNC has been a key participant in Technology Development for the DoD Joint Precision Approach and Landing System (JPALS). Sea Based JPALS is a system consisting of hardware and software that uses the GPS Precise Positioning Service (PPS) and an Ultra-high Frequency (UHF) data link (DL) to perform relative area navigation to JPALS-equipped US Navy, US Coast Guard, and North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) ships. Relative measurement processing using GPS data is used to meet the accuracy, integrity, continuity, and availability requirements of Sea Based JPALS supported operations. The ship relative augmentations to GPS PPS are based on relative GPS positioning concepts. GPS measurement functions within Sea Based JPALS are protected by GPS anti-jam equipment. The Data Link supports the precision approach, relative area navigation, and surveillance functions during both normal operations and certain emissions control (EMCON) operations.

JPALS  Increment 1 provides a Global Positioning System (GPS) based precision approach and landing capability that supports a 200 ft decision height and one-half (1/2) nautical mile (nm) visibility; a ship relative navigation capability for aircraft operating to, from, and around the ship out to at least 200 nm; secure two-way communications with the ship; and surveillance of aircraft within the Carrier Control Area (CCA) and on approach by ship operators on military air-capable ships.

JPALS SDD Increment 1 is currently in source selection.  SNC is on the Honeywell JPALS Team.
