Electronically Reconfigurable Aperture (ERA)

SNC’s Electronically Reconfigurable Aperture (ERA) is a revolutionary new beam-forming and beam-steering antenna which combines high beam-forming flexibility, nanosecond switching time, and cost effectiveness.  The ERA represents a real-time hologram operating at microwave and millimeter wave frequencies. SNC has tested prototypes working at X through W-bands in 1D and 2D embodiments.  For operation in the W-band, the ERA is a MMIC device.

Potential applications include:

  • Missile seekers
  • Small arms fire detection
  • Concealed object detection
  • Automotive collision avoidance
  • Detect, see, and avoid
  • Maritime security
  • Perimeter surveillance

  Integrated Electronically Reconfigurable Aperture (ERA)

  • 1D and 2-D beam-steering/beam-forming functionality, including simultaneous individually controlled multiple beams, nulling, focusing, and zooming
  • Operation from X-band through W-band
  • Insertion losses lower than 3 dB
  • Integrated monolithic ERA demonstrated at 76 GHz and 94 GHz

Replacement for Phased Array Antennas (PAA)

  • ERA brings PAA performance to a wide range of uses at a fraction of PAA cost

Benefits

  • Removes unwieldy gimbal and motion compensation
  • High level integrated design (PCB based at low frequencies or monolithic IC at high frequencies) -- ready for mass production
Reduces Increases
  • Acquisition cost (10-100 times)
  • Weight
  • Profile
  • Life cycle cost
  • Reproducibility
  • Temperature stability
  • Affordability
  • Number of applications
