Space Systems Business Area a Growing Player in Colorado Economy
Sparks, NV, Nov. 24th, 2008 – Colorado’s aerospace industry is the second largest in the United States and Sierra Nevada Corporation (SNC)’s Space Systems Business Area formed by its recent acquisition of MicroSat Systems Inc., and the $117M Orbcomm OG2 Award is contributing to that continued growth.
In 2007, aerospace employment in Colorado passed Texas to make it the second largest in the country, only trailing California. In January of 2008, SNC acquired MicroSat Systems Inc. of Littleton, Colorado.
SNC expects that its Space Systems Business Area, that includes SNC’s subsidiary MicroSat Systems, will provide advanced satellite systems, propulsion systems, space vehicle systems and a wide array of subsystems and components to defense, civil government, and corporate customers.
“The aerospace sector is a key driver that is helping Colorado’s economy fare better than other parts of the country,” said newly elected Colorado Senator Mark Udall.
"Compared to a lot of other segments of the economy, we're doing pretty well," said Todd Mosher, director of advanced systems at MicroSat Systems.
A lot of that outlook is driven by the 18 satellite order that Sierra Nevada Corporation won along with MicroSat Systems from Orbcomm, Inc. That order has an option to build 30 more of these communications satellites and MicroSat Systems expects other customers to be interested in the same spacecraft for other missions. They have already received a small contract from NOAA to study the possibility of hosting a Boulder-based Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics payload on this spacecraft to perform a science mission instead of the communications mission it was built for.
