Scathe View

Sparks, Nevada – January 19, 2007
Sierra Nevada Corporation engineering supports local air guard mission.

On December 15, 2006, the Nevada Air National Guard (NVANG), Reno, NV was called into assist in search and rescue efforts to help find 3 lost hikers on Mt Hood. The NVANG operates Scathe View, a unique Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance system flown on the unit’s C130 Hercules aircraft. The system consists of a multisensor turret mounted under the nose radome and a twoperson workstation. The workstation is manned by Airborne Imagery Analysts who operate the turret and communications equipment on the workstation. The NVANG C130s are unique in that they are the only C130s in the US Air Force inventory configured to carry the Scathe View system, and the Airborne Imagery Analysts at the NVANG are the only personnel qualified to operate it.

Scathe View has been an integral part of the Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) forces employed in Operation Iraqi Freedom over the past 4 years. In support of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF), Scathe View has been employed to support combat forces on the ground, ISR collection efforts for U.S. Central Command Air Forces (CENTAF) and U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) and to aid in the search for improvised explosive devices.

In supporting the search and rescue efforts on Mt. Hood, Scathe View flew three missions from December 15 – December 17. With its Infrared (IR) thermal imaging sensor, Scathe View crews looked for heat signatures from the lost hikers while helping keep track of rescue efforts. These cooccurring activities ensured the rescue effort was as effective as possible.

During the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, Scathe View was also used to help locate and rescue stranded citizens in the ravaged areas and to assess damage to municipal infrastructures.

Sierra Nevada Corporation is currently under contract to upgrade the Scathe View system with sophisticated datalink systems to further enhance Scathe View’s ISR information dissemination capabilities.
