Sierra Nevada Corporation Awarded $8.7 Million for New US Army Mobile Tower System
Sparks, Nevada (May 12, 2006) – Sierra Nevada Corporation (SNC) announced today that it has received a $8.7 million contract from the United States Army to develop a new Mobile Tower System (MOTS) that will provide a world-wide deployable Air Traffic Control (ATC) capability to Army Aviation.
The MOTS is designed to provide extensive air traffic control capabilities in a highly mobile and versatile platform. Rapidly deployable, the system supports operation at military/civilian airfields and tactical landing zones for three ATC operators and one supervisor and is air transportable by CH-47 and C-130 aircraft. Working with teammate General Dynamics C4 Systems, SNC’s MOTS development effort will bring the latest in ruggedized air traffic services, runway lighting, night vision compatibility, environmental effects, secure communications, basic weather information and precision location to any battlefield, disaster relief effort, or ATC training operations worldwide.
The new Mobile Tower System plays a key role in ensuring that air traffic controllers can rapidly set-up and operate an airfield in a battle zone and provide critical air traffic services to the aviators and benefiting the passengers who rely on them.
Work on the MOTS program will begin immediately with the first deliveries scheduled for 2007. In addition to this selection, options exist that could ultimately result in up to 22 MOTS systems being provided to the Army.
