Spectral Systems Inc. Chosen to Take the Next Step in Digital Receiver
Encoding and Processing
Dayton, Ohio – (July 3 , 2003) – Spectral Systems Inc. announced today that the Air Force
Research Laboratory (AFRL) Sensors Directorate has selected Spectral Systems Inc. (SSI) to
develop the next generation of parameter encoding and sorting, preprocessing and deinterleaving
techniques for the Air Force’s Electronic Support and Threat Warning digital receiver systems.
SSI received a $1.019 M contract from AFRL’s Wright Research Site on June 27th for the Real-
Time Encoding Processing (RTEP) program. RTEP is a three-year R&D effort to develop robust
and efficient digital signal processing (DSP) and data processing algorithms to handle high-rate,
digitized data encountered in modern, complex RF environments. RTEP is focused on developing
solutions for stressing RF signals embedded in dense, complex RF environments that cannot be
effectively handled by existing digital receiver encoding and processing techniques. Along with
algorithm development, the RTEP program will also examine prototyping of advanced algorithms
in Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) technology and will explore methods of minimizing the
size, weight and power requirements of encoding and processing systems for Air Force system
upgrades and new Air Force Group (AFG) platforms, such as Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs).
Dave Sharpin, Chief Engineer of SSI said, “The RTEP program allows AFRL and SSI to take the
next step in digital receiver encoding and processing. It will allow us to attack stressing signal
cases that cannot be handled today and to develop firmware-based preprocessing and
deinterleaving techniques that truly utilize the quantum leap in functionality and performance
provided by wideband digital receiver technology.”
