SNC Lands in Europe!

Sparks, Nevada – (February 18, 2003) – Sierra Nevada Corporation (SNC) announced today that its Automatic Takeoff and Landing System (ATOLS) performed the first ever radar automatic landings of the RUAG Ranger Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV)! The landings were performed in the snowy, mountain conditions of Emmon,
Switzerland, and were the result of a cooperative demonstration program between SNC and RUAG Aerospace, a Swiss Company. The successful landings also highlighted the first ever use of an SNC landing system in Europe!

RUAG and SNC conducted the demonstrations to show that ATOLS was interchangeable with the existing Ranger landing system and could ultimately provide the Ranger with an all-weather automatic landing capability. Numerous ATOLS landings were performed during the demo with the Ranger putting its skids in the snow
precisely on the predicted landing spot each time. At the completion of the demonstration, SNC’s on-site Program Manager proclaimed that both the ATOLS and the SNC test team had shown their capabilities and mettle in the frigid and snowy winter conditions.

Both SNC and RUAG plan on continuing their joint efforts and expect to announce several collaborative opportunities in the near future. SNC’s Director of UAV Programs announced that the successful demo creates some spectacular business opportunities with RUAG in the European marketplace. The ATOLS is SNC’s export version of the Tactical Automatic Landing System (TALS) currently in service with the United States Army’s Shadow Tactical UAV.
