Sierra Nevada Corporation is recognized for its Dream Chaser Orbital Space Vehicle

Sparks, Nevada – September 9, 2010 – SNC Corporate Vice President Mark Sirangelo discusses Dream Chaser, the Space Systems Group newest program, and its impact on privatized commercial space flight in Discover Magazine’s September issue. Earlier this year SNC received the largest award, $20 million, of the $50 million provided by NASA’s Commercial Crew Development Program, known as CCDEV.  This major initiative, funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), begins the development of important technologies which could lead to America’s next space vehicles to replace the retiring Space Shuttle. SNC has been developing the Dream Chaser using internal funds for several years. With the NASA funding combined with additional internal investment, SNC will conduct important advances in the program including the initial build and test of the structure and the first test firing of the on-board motors.  In describing the Dream Chaser, David Kushner, the articles author, called SNC’s vehicle “the most tangible product of the agency’s controversial new mission: privatizing space exploration”.

The Dream Chaser program is being led by former Astronaut Jim Voss and former NASA executive Merri Sanchez.   SNC is the prime contractor for the program and leads an industry group of highly experienced major space companies, talented small businesses, universities and NASA centers in this important national effort. The SNC Dream Chaser is derived from and builds on a previous NASA design and is a seven crew reusable lifting body that takes off vertically and lands horizontally. Its missions will includes delivering and returning crew and critical cargo from the International Space Station, conducting servicing missions to low earth orbit (LEO), facilitating science experiments, testing and other such critical efforts. Dream Chaser is scheduled to take its first flight by 2014.
